First off, I absolutely love the idea of the foam roller when used appropriately. Unfortunately, often times athletes (or their trainers) excessively roll over the already tight I.T. Band in attempt to release tension.
If a band of connective tissue is already stressed, adding additional stress isn’t necessarily the key! The image I have attached is to encourage trainers and athletes to spend time focusing on the TFL (tensor fasciae latae). When this muscle is tight it puts a lot of stress on the IT band.
But don’t stop at this muscle alone. The more important question is “why?” Why is this muscle tight? When an athlete has relatively weak gluteus medius muscles, the TFL has to over engage in attempt to compensate. This is just one of the many possible reasons. But as always, take a moment to ask ‘why’ with any exercise that you partake in or suggest for someone else.
